Stable Isotope Laboratory

The mass spectrometry lab is equipped for the isotope (13C, 15N, 18O) analysis of carbonates, water, bulk organic solids, and individual organic molecules.

Instruments include an Elementar Isoprime attached to a dual micro-inlet and a multicarb sample prep module capable of running 60 automated samples of carbonate or water. The Isoprime is also connected to a EuroVector EA3024 with an 80 position autosampler for analysis of 15N and 13C of organics. The EA is also connected to a diluter allowing for the sequential analysis of Carbon and Nitrogen.  An additional Perkin Elmer 2400 CHNS EA is available to measure weight percent of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur.  Services are provided on a fee-per-service basis and are subject to both staff and instrument availability. Instruments also include a Thermo Delta V Plus connected to a Trace GC 1310 and GC-Isolink II for the isotopic analysis of individual organic compounds including lipids, amino acids, and methane. A GasBench is also connected for the headspace CO2 and 13C of DOC analysis.
