Title, "Global and Local Sustainability Challenges, and What We Can Do About Them"

We humans currently face substantial environmental, social, and economic challenges, and these will drive changes on local to global scales. Will these changes be abrupt or otherwise difficult? Or, will we find ways to mitigate the challenges and adjust gracefully to new norms. Will we have sustainable development that maintains or improves lives and livelihoods in a manner that “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” as called for by the Brundtland Commission 30 years ago? This presentation will open with examples of current challenges and then offer some perspectives based on the speaker’s career experience that today’s students and faculty may find useful as they pursue their work.
