City of Columbia STAR Communities Sustainability Report 2017

The City of Columbia has collaborated with the Sustainability Tools for Assessing and Rating (STAR) Communities nonprofit organization to accelerate the City’s efforts in sustainable practices. Currently, STAR Communities is being implemented in almost 100 communities throughout the United States and Canada, reaching over 40 million citizens. Within the STAR Communities Certification Process, the City of Columbia is transitioning from the application process to data collection. Utilizing the STAR Communities Comprehensive Framework that provides various indicators for which a community may demonstrate sustainable practices, data will be collected and organized to assess how sustainable the City of Columbia is in its current state. This data will demonstrate areas where the City is thriving as well as challenge areas for which solutions will be need to be created and considered. The main objective of this project is to provide a comprehensive document that summarizes these findings. The completed Sustainability Report will be turned in by December 8, 2017. Once the City of Columbia has a document with the compilation of its research, it can proceed with the certification process as the STAR Communities organization reviews the data and allots a level of certification accordingly. The City’s goal is to become a Certified 3-STAR Community with recognition in sustainability leadership.
